I have been writing articles and submitting them to various article directories for around a year now. When I started I felt very fresh and had plenty to write about. After a few months however, I started to get what is known as writers block. I could not think of anything else to write about. In this article I give advice about how to react when this happens, advice which I hope will help you to continue to write quality and original articles.

I have been writing articles and submitting them to various article directories for around a year now. When I started I felt very fresh and had plenty to write about. After a few months however, I started to get what is known as writers block. I could not think of anything else to write about. In this article I give advice about how to react when this happens, advice which I hope will help you to continue to write quality and original articles.

My name is Steve Hill and my line of business is as a speech coach. I developed a stutter when I was four years of age and it continued to affect my life for the next eighteen years. I have managed to overcome this speech impediment and as a career I now help other people to achieve fluency. I feel I know quite a lot about the subject and found it quite easy and enjoyable to write about all aspects of stuttering.

After a while I could not think of anything new to write about stuttering, which would be of value to people and made the mistake or re-writing some of the
articles using different words. I must admit I was unaware that this was against the rules but now realise that each article needs to have original content, which I accept and understand.

I then wrote about some of the experiences from my own life, like how I coped when my now ex-girlfriend left me and even stories about my dog! A number of people have read these articles and have sent me some very nice e-mails stating how much they have enjoyed them.

One morning I woke up with very good intentions, I was planning on writing three or four new articles. I turned on the computer and basically sat there. Come on write something, I tried to tell myself. The problem was that I could not think of anything to write about. I decided to go back to bed. I seem to be able to think clearer from my bed, a bit weird I know.

I decided that I was not only going to write about my own life and experiences but I would also write about my family and friends. Other areas I could write about would be:

How to promote a website

Web design

Self confidence

Travel

World affairs

Sport

Exercise

Weight loss

Stress management

Anger management

Business

These are all areas I have a great interest in and even though they are not my main line of business, the articles should be of interest to people. Most of the topics which I have listed are things which I or people I know, have had experiences with. For example a lot of people who stutter including myself in the past, have issues with their self-confidence.

Weight loss is subject which is close to my heart as I have had many problems in controlling my own weight. I also run my own business and therefore have had to learn aspects about how to do this.

I also love playing and watching sport. This was therefore something else which I then concentrated on and I have now written articles on snooker and football.

To gain inspiration and to help me to write my articles, I read a lot of books and newspapers and I also like to watch the news and current affairs programs on the television

There are many sources of free advertising online but, sadly, with most of them you get what you pay for: nothing. Article writing and publishing is different: it is both free and effective.

There are some people who simply cannot or will not write. A webmaster who can't write or refuses to will have the choice of hiring a ghost writer (expensive), buying "limited edition" pre-written articles that will be sold to a few hundred other webmasters (cheaper but still a significant dent in the advertising budget) or republishing articles offered on article directory websites (free). The free option is the most popular and, if you can write, you get the chance to have your article with a link to your website used by the webmasters who republish articles from the directories.

Writers can be divided into two categories: the ones who find writing easy and the ones who don't. There is such a thing as a "natural" writer just as there are natural born artists and musicians. The natural writer can produce an article in the time it takes for a cup of coffee to cool down to drinking temperature and, at the same time, be planning the next article and the one after that. If writing comes easily to you, you will probably find that the process of submitting your articles to other webmasters and directories takes longer that the actual writing.

Being a natural writer is a matter of luck just the same as being double jointed, blue eyed or tall. Unlike these characteristics, which you can't change, the ability to write is something many people can learn. Many people who say they can't write, have never tried it but, if you know how to get started, you can become a proficient writer. If writing ability was not given to you as an art, you can make it your craft provided you have the ability to spell and a grasp of the rules of grammar. You probably won't be able to train yourself to be a great poet or a world-renowned literary figure but, with a little effort, most people can train themselves to produce decent ezine articles.

The most common problems quoted by people who want to try writing ezine articles are that they don't know what to write about and that they can't find enough to say. If you are not an experienced writer, always write about something you know: if you are having a struggle with the process of putting ideas into writing, you don't need the added work of carrying out time consuming research. When you have managed to craft a few articles you will find that thinking up subject matter and finding enough to say is no longer a problem (trust me here, even though it might seem unlikely it's true), so just start writing.

Make the subject of your first article something you understand and, preferably, enjoy. The subject, for the purpose of this exercise, is irrelevant. You could describe how to saddle a horse correctly, the right way to swing a golf club, the best way to spring clean a house, the history of pizza, how to keep your fingernails in good condition or literally anything you can think of. The list could go on and on, everyone has an interest or an idea about how to do something. It doesn't matter if your first article never gets published, use it as a test run, concentrate on the technique of article writing.

For this exercise aim to write an article of not less than 500 words. That might sound a lot but it is about one page of a word processor document with the font set at 12. Having decided upon a topic for your article, imagine you are telling a friend about it. For ezine articles it is normally better to adopt an informal, conversational tone that lets the reader know you are sharing information, not lecturing or talking down to him.

Start with a general introduction to your subject, follow that with 3 or 4 paragraphs dealing with different aspects of the topic and finish with a closing paragraph. The closing paragraph can be very brief but it is better to round the article off than just appear to stop because you ran out of steam. It's a bit like "that's all, folks" or "The End" when a movie finishes.

When you have written your article get a friend or relative to read it and give an honest opinion. The two most important things to find out are whether the article was interesting and whether it succeeded in explaining what you set out to convey. You can ask for points for artistic merit but style can be polished as you gain more confidence in your writing. The ability to get your message across is vital. The next step is to write an article, using the same format, on a subject related to the business you want to publicise.

The final thing required is to invent an attention grabbing title for your article and the transformation will be complete. You are now a writer.

It does not take rocket science to figure that I and every other article marketer am using articles to benefit our own promotions, but they will be of little benefit to us if we do not produce quality articles that others will actually want to read and use.

Owning my own article directory I have read thousands of articles, many of which I would never use on my other sites or in newsletters and many I have declined for various reasons. Let us consider the rights and wrongs of articles starting at the beginning.

Attention Grabbing

Your title is your headline, there to grab attention and many people never look past the first 2 or 3 words. I could have called this Sheep Do Not Mix With Article Marketing, Blog Marketing, Content  arketing & Online Success but I want people who are interested in Article Marketing, Blog Marketing, Content  arketing & Online and not sheep to read it. Another type of title that will not grab me is The Top 20 Tips For Passionate Sex. It would be more likely to create interest if it was Passionate Sex My Top 20 Tips.

Writing Standards

Spelling and grammar are important. You are promoting yourself and your business and you need to present yourself as professional to be taken seriously. I write my articles in Word first and use the spell checker. I sometimes fall out with it because I am English and prefer not to use Americanised spelling.

If you have problems with writing but good information the answer is to use a ghostwriter or copywriter. There are plenty of good writers advertising on the Internet and personally I think that one good quality article will do more for your business than 10 poor articles.

Know Your Subject

Good advice for writers is that they should always know and understand what they are writing about or their articles have no credibility. I was gobsmacked last week to read an article about my own country that I knew to be very ill informed and by somebody I suspected had never set foot on our shores. The guy could not even spell Britain right and as his misspelling was in the title he sunk without trace before he even started!

Original Copy

The best and most memorable articles are purely original, thought provoking and offer different viewpoints to a subject. Some writers submit zillions of slightly changed articles about the same subject over and over; yawn. They are boring and eminently unreadable after the first one or two. There are exceptions where writers are providing updates and news about their chosen subjects. I would use those articles for my sites.

Lists of quotes from the bible for instance are not original articles. At least 90% should be your own work and quotes only used as a point of interest not as the whole article. Submitting articles on behalf of others is suspect, how do readers know whether you have filched them or not? Plagiarism, not worth going there, eagle eyes and google will find you out!

Advertorial Blues

An advertorial is an advert written in article form. They carry no unbiased information or advice that would be of any help to anybody interested in that subject. There are plenty of places to advertise for free on the Internet, so trying to fob adverts off as articles is unfair on directory site owners or visitors who want to read articles not adverts.

Link Usage

The reason most of us use Article Marketing, Blog Marketing, Content  arketing & Online for promoting our businesses is to place links to our websites in the author resource boxes usually placed at the foot of articles.

I like to maximise the potential and use the up to 3 links usually allowed. Many article directories allow active links, but some do not. A problem can arise when articles are automatically submitted if the script the site uses strips the html. I prefer to submit manually mostly and then I can activate the links myself or just put my website address if the site doesn't accept html links.

Links within the articles are unacceptable on most directory sites, but as you get 3 chances in the resource boxes there is no point trying to cheat.

All Keyed Up

You will be asked to provide some keywords for your articles so choose wisely. Study your content and consider what somebody who might be interested in your article is most likely to enter into the search engines. A poor example is if you are writing about search engine optimisation and your title is SEO, Internet Business Bread And Jam, you would not use jam and bread as keywords unless you wanted to attract hungry people. Apart from that your articles credibility takes a nosedive if you do not know what a good keyword is.

Readability

Finally, your article should not be repetitive and should be interesting. Short paragraphs make it easier to read, text talk makes it more difficult. All capitals in the article body or title are a no no, they only stand out in the sense that the reader feels shouted at and nobody wants to feel like that.
