World Cup 2006 Preview - Japan

Japan are a difficult team to predict. Last year they beat European champions Greece and earned a credible draw with Brazil in last year’s Confederations Cup but their qualifying campaign was less than convincing.

Japan are a difficult team to predict. Last year they beat European champions Greece and earned a credible draw with Brazil in last year’s Confederations Cup but their qualifying campaign was less than convincing.

They lost just once in 12 qualifying matches, away at Iran, and topped the group overall, but they only managed to score more than two goals against a severely depleted Indian side and needed last minute wins against Oman and Korea DPR.

Such feebleness in qualification saw the public call for manager Zico’s head but the fact they qualified for the tournament will save the Brazilian football legend’s job for the time being. Japan reached the second round four years ago but they will do well to reach that stage this time around.

The 2002 campaign saw Japan defeat a dismal Russia before narrowly losing out to Turkey in the second round. Legend has it that then-coach Phillipe Troussier chose striker Akinori Nishizawa, who had not played in the tournament, ahead of regular strikers Takayuki Suzuki and Atushi Yanagisawa because it was his birthday. Surely Zico wouldn’t make such a mistake?

A UK-based midfield trio of Hidetoshi Nakata (Bolton Wanderers), Shunsuke Nakamura (Celtic), Junichi Inamoto (West Bromwich Albion) and if fit, Shinji Ono of Feyenoord gives Japan their best chance of success – it’s the rest of the team which lacks true international class.

The regular strike pairing of Naohiro Takahara and Yanagisawa do not get regular club football with Hamburg and Messina while the rest of the side is made up of residents of the vastly improving J-League. Only four of the 23 players in last year’s Confederations Cup squad were based abroad.

The centre half-pairing of Gamba Osaka’s Tsuneyasu Miyamoto and Yokohama’s Yuji Nakazawa were solid throughout a qualification campaign which conceded just five goals but Brazil, Croatia and Australia will provide a much sterner test. Portsmouth flop Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, made the scapegoat after Pompey lost 4-1 at home to Leyton Orient on his debut, has featured over 80 times in goal for his country.

Japan may be victims of their own recent success and expectation will be great at this year’s finals. While there is plenty of talent in midfield, the team as a whole may not be up to emulating their group topping exploits of four years ago and are unlikely to figure in the knockout stages.

Recommended Bet
An unconvincing qualification campaign and a lack of goals from the two strikers means Japan cannot be backed to qualify from the group. In fact, they could be propping up the rest by the time the three first round matches are completed and backing against them could be a better investment than supporting them.

Croatia to beat Japan @ 4/5

World Cup Betting: repeating as world cup champions is not a good bet!

The 18th FIFA World Cup will begin play June 9th when the top 32 nations battle for world soccer supremacy and the Brazilians looked like the favorites at most betting shops.

The 18th FIFA World Cup will begin play June 9th when the top 32 nations battle for world soccer supremacy and the Brazilians looked like the favorites at most betting shops. They bring a wealth of scoring power with the likes of Ronoldo, Ronoldinho, Gaúcho, Kaká, and Robinho, but defense wins championships and they are loaded on the backend!

The Brazilians are similar to the talented US Men’s basketball teams in that they are loaded with firepower, but can they mesh as a unit? Early games against Croatia, Austria and Japan should be a breeze, but they must face the host Germany team early in the tournament and remember it has been 44 years since a country last won back to back titles.

Brazil won in 1958 and 1962 and is 3-1 favorites this year!

At 6-1 Argentina is on most bettor’s radar screen after a solid runner-up placing at last year’s FIFA Confederation Cup to Brazil. The country is still stinging from the first round exit in 2002 in Japan/Korea, so they should be focused.

They must tackle an inspired African team in Cotes d’ivorie that will try and represent its oppressed nation, and they will get a scare, but will join the Netherlands in the round of 16!

England is dealing with the injury bug as Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is battling a broken bone in his foot. With Rooney to miss opening round matches, the pressure will be squarely on Michael Owen’s shoulders and he just recover from yes a broken foot.

An intriguing matchup will occur in Group B when England squares off against Sweden as England’s coach Sven-Goran Eriksson faces his homeland and no doubt emotions will run high that day!

It goes without saying that he throws the party, gets his choice of music and Germany is certainly singing a sweet tune with their grouping. Costa Rica, Ecuador and Poland are not exactly world powers, so the home side will get a nice tune-up for the Sweet 16 round. Michael Ballack who stars for Chelsea will be prominent on the score sheet in this tourney!

Holland is very young and is in a testy pool with Argentina, Serbia-Montenegro and the hyped up Ivory Coast squad, who will feature Drogba from Chelsea and Toure from Arsenal. It is expected that Argentina and Holland will advance, but most experts call for a shocker in this group!

Group E gives you the Italians and Americans, but the Czech Republic will make noise in this division. Totti and Toni are talented scorers, but the Italians are famous for underachieving. The United States has done horrible under coach Bruce Arena is Europe with a pitiful 1-7-2 record and he could get the boot, if they fail to advance.

The Czech’s like their hockey team can fill the net as Koller, Rosicky and Baros, will give opposing defenses fits!

At 10-1 I like the Frenchmen as they have an easy draw, which will benefit this experienced team. Playing against the likes of Switzerland, South Korea and Togo will be a nice tune-up for round two and their veterans Zidane, Thuram and Makelele give them a chance for the huge upset!

World Cup Betting Update

For many years there has been an argument in sports circles regarding the partaking in sexual activity prior to and leading up to a game, match or prize fight. I mean even in the movie Rocky 1 the Italian Stallion had to say “Yo Adrian no fooling around” the night before he met Apollo Creed in the square circle.

Word has come out of the Ukraine soccer camp that coach Oleg Blokhin has decided to use the promise of sex for his players if they reach the semi finals. Ukraine, playing in their first World Cup finals, have been drawn in Group H, along with Spain, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia!

My take on this is that if Ukraine stuns the soccer world by getting that far, why you would give the boys a reward, rather then hold off until they win the grand prize. Most coaches think that depriving players of their personal freedom gives them a soldier mentality and keeps that “eye of the tiger” mentality.

The World Cup kicks off on June 9.

Veteran Japan midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata on the other hand is concerned that his young Japan team is not properly focused, prior to their friendly with Germany.

Japan is coached by Brazilian legend Zico and 11 members of Japan's 23-strong squad were veterans of the 2002 World Cup finals on home soil, Nakata said only four struggled through France 1998 when Japan made a winless, one-goal debut on the big stage.

Without the advantage of home field and the support of millions of Asian fans, I look for Japan to get bounced early.

I know we encourage our young adults to speak their mind and make a difference in our society, but I’m not sure that officials at Bangladesh University are teaching students, to burn property in the street, when they have a demand. Seems like several students in the one of fifteen dormitories on campus, were unhappy with the quality of the two television sets in the lounge area and decided to throw them in the street and ignite them. This was their way of displaying their anger, as the country awaits the beginning of the World Cup.

Meanwhile French fans are optimistic about their squad’s chances, even though defending champions in 2002, France disappeared from the tournament in the first round without winning a match or scoring a goal.

But the opinion poll carried out by L'Equipe newspaper found that French fans were optimistic over how Zinedine Zidane and his team-mates will perform in Germany where they are grouped with Switzerland, Togo and South Korea.

The poll showed that 51 percent of fans thought that their side would reach at least the semi-finals, while 15 percent said they would go all the way and win it as they did in 1998.

There was good news too for the embattled Domenech with 68 percent of fans saying they had full confidence in him and only 19 percent saying the opposite.

On whether the team was dependent on Real Madrid playmaker Zinedine Zidane, French fans were split with 45 percent saying it was and 48 percent saying it was not.
