The true origins of the Game, Sports & Contest now called golf have been hotly debated over the years, as throughout history almost every civilisation has played some form of Game, Sports & Contest with a club and a ball. Various competing ideas have been put forward as to its initial derivation and over the years there have been many different ways to play. Probably the one constant that is universally accepted, is that the original essence of the modern Game, Sports & Contest can trace its origins back to the pastime of “gowf”, as played on the links lands of the East of Scotland long before the 15th Century, which has over time grown into the great Game, Sports & Contest of “golf” as we currently know it.

It was around the seaside towns of Aberdeen, St. Andrews and Leith on the outskirts of Edinburgh, with their expanses of rolling sandy grounds, or links, which lie between the sea and the town, that a Game, Sports & Contest resembling today’s golf really took hold and formed the discernable start of an evolutionary process which still continues right up to this day.

Since this time, there have been many changes within the Game, Sports & Contest with the rules changing numerous times over the years (http://www.ruleshistory.com/ ), ever since the earliest surviving written rules created by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith in March 1744. The balls have also been subject to developments, with the introduction at St Andrews, in 1848, of an inexpensive and more durable rubbery ball to replace the previously expensive and unpredictable feathery balls which would often not last even a one entire Game, Sports & Contest.

Another significant milestone in golfing history was the creation in 1851 of the first purpose built golf course in Prestwick on the links of Monkton parish, followed soon after in 1860 by the first open championship on the same course. Since that time the Game, Sports & Contest has spread right around the world from Europe to America and even through to China and Japan. The courses however still tend to imitate those earliest of Scottish creations, although American courses have leant towards longer fairways and softer greens. Competitions have also seen a massive growth in interest, following recent sponsorship deals and the introduction of televised coverage.

These days everyone seems to want to play. During the summer, courses become heavily used and parks throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK are filled with people knocking a ball about. There are purpose built golf courses all around the country, and there are specialist companies offering short golfing holidays (http://www.superbreak.com/search/golf-breaks.htm ) who are now tapping in to the desire to play on some of the world's finest courses which are to be found in Britain.

Today the Game, Sports & Contest of golf has significantly evolved from the primitive, haphazard and casual Game, Sports & Contest it started out as, with the very earliest players initially having to carve their own clubs and balls from wood. Now modern casting methods mean that clubs can be made much stronger and more affordably making the Game, Sports & Contest open to all who want to play, while research into synthetic and composite materials has lead to top end performance clubs using titanium heads and graphite shafts for those who can afford them. While most designers have sought to improve performance through subtle developments such as materials changes, other ingenious entrepreneurs have tried making clubs which contain a built in gyroscope or created a single reusable shaft and a selection of changeable screw in club heads, in order to out wit the rules.

Changes in ball design, official rules, the introduction of more competitive equipment produced by skilled craftsmen such as forged metal heads for niblick clubs which were prone to breakage, increases in the number of courses, and promotion by the media, have made what was a simple pastime in Scotland into a multimillion pound worldwide phenomenon.

Golf - Principles Of The Game, Sports & Contest

In a golf course, we find bunkers and water bodies. We wonder why they are there in the course. They are called hazards or obstacles, laid in the golf course to make the Game, Sports & Contest more difficult for the players. Depressions are created in the ground and filled with sand. Water hazards may be a pond or a stream. Golfers try to avoid such hazards, but if the ball lands in hazards, the player hits the ball if it is playable otherwise lifts the ball out and plays or plays another ball...

Golfers try to avoid such hazards, but if the ball lands in hazards, the player hits the ball if it is playable otherwise lifts the ball out and plays or plays another ball. If the player uses another ball, he is penalized and one more stroke is added to his score.

Now let us see some basic principles of the Game, Sports & Contest. The grip of the player on his club is very important. The grips are of three types: overlapping, interlocking or the baseball grip. A golfer however chooses the one that is most comfortable to him.

Next, a proper stance is important for an accurate swing. Golfers use wide stance for long shots and a narrow stance for close shots, in order to maintain balance. Proper body coordination is important for a correct swing. A golfer lines up the club head with the ball, first, shifts his body weight to his rear leg, and makes his back swing. As he makes the down swing, the weight is shifted forward, hits the ball, and follows through.

Some terms used in golf are, “bridle” which a score is gained under par on a hole.

“Bogie” is a score of one above par on a hole and a double bogie and triple bogie are two and three above par hole.

“Eagle” is two scores under a par hole.

If a player puts the ball into the hole from a tee shot is known as “hole in one” or an “ace”.

If a player is less competent than his opponent is, a method of equalizing is adopted by allowing a certain number of strokes to the less skilful player and this is known as “handicap”.

“Lie” is a position of the ball when it lies on the course after it is hit.

There are two types of Game, Sports & Contests in golf competitions. One is “Match Play” and the other is “Stroke Play”. Golf is an individual Game, Sports & Contest as well as a team Game, Sports & Contest. In match play a golfer or a team hitting the ball into the hole, in minimum numbers of shots wins that hole. Thus, a player or a team winning most number of holes wins the Game, Sports & Contest. In a match, if they say a player is one up or two up that means the player has won that many holes against his opponent. The Game, Sports & Contest is decided when a player has won more holes than the remaining holes. If either teams or players have equal number of hole then the holes are halved and the Game, Sports & Contest is tie. The Game, Sports & Contest then continues. The player or team who win the first hole is declared winner.

In stroke play, the player who takes minimum number of total strokes is the winner. Professional stroke play tournaments are played for 72 holes, which is four rounds, in a normal golf course. Tiebreaker is by way of playoff. In playoffs, the Game, Sports & Contest is played until one player scores lower on one hole.

For a “Grand Slam” for men, a competition of four Game, Sports & Contests is organized, in the order of Masters Tournament, the United States Open, the British Open and the Professional Golfers’ Association of America.

Golf - The Short - Short Game, Sports & Contest

Without doubt we have all hear the expression in golfing “Drive for show and putt for dough. Nothing could be truer. In golf as in life - all shots in the end count the same. A lost putt counts the same as the long drive.

How many times have you made a good long drive off the tee, another second shot just short of the green , and then for some reason the pitch to the green is either too short or too long ?. In the end you may well have ended up taking three putts to put the ball unto the cup.

Four shots have been made from the pitch shot to putting the ball in the cup, which are twice as many as it took to get from the tee to the near edge of the green. For a par four hole this means a double bogey. Have too many of these and your golfing score is more than ruined.

Contrary to this, if you can learn to pitch and chip the ball reasonably close to the flag stick, you stand a good change of dropping the golf ball for a par score. On the shorter par four holes and most of the par five holes, a well placed pitch shot, close to the flag stick, affords the golfing player an opportunity to birdie the hole.

One of the most certain ways to improve pitching ability is to practice the shot from various distances to the target. From such practice it is soon possible to learn the range for each club used, and get the idea as to the length of the backswing necessary for the needed distance.

The best first step is to always learn from the Pros. Why waste much time and effort afterwards unlearning bad habits picked up along the way. Proper form and technique in putting is everything. Next practice the stroke in your own backyard or on the driving range putting area until you can place the ball within easy putting distance of your target most of the time.

Pitching for about an hour at a time, it should not take long before you should be able to place most of your practice shots to within a six foot circle. Even though the grass surface near the circle may not be exactly the same as a putting green, easy adjustments can be made in your stroke to compensate.

All in all for all of your efforts to practice your short Game, Sports & Contest you will improve your pitch and run shots greatly. Chip shots can also be practiced in this manner. When you place your ball within a six foot circle you will have only a three foot putt or even less to the golf cup.

The full hit backspin or the cut shots are more difficult, and perhaps should be tried at the practice range of the golf course. You may well damage your own lawn. These are valuable shots in hitting over trees, out of heavy rough or sand, or to pitch over a trap where there is little room for the ball to run on the green to the cup.

Playing out of sand traps is a harrowing experience for most high handicap golfers, and is the place in the golfing Game, Sports & Contest where more shots are wasted than any other place on the golf course, except perhaps the putting green. Even though these trap shots are more difficult for the average player than some others , they can be learn, when one develops the proper coordination of mind m muscles and nerves which control perfect timing.

Finally, all the excellence of good pitch shots, chips and sand play will all be of little consequence if one cannot putt the ball into the cup with reasonable regularity. With proper initial professional instruction and a little regular practice anyone can learn to put well.
