If you like taking pictures, downloading and editing it, you also probably want to save them and sooner or later print them. You can do it by simply saving your images onto your personal computer. For you to easily find your images, creating a specific folder is essential.

However you don’t just want to keep them on your computer and save it for life; perhaps you also like to print and frame some your work or build a tangible collection of them. There are many ways to print a perfect carrier for an image. Because its digital they can easily transported, there is no need for special equipment in terms of viewing them, and you produce additional copies easily. However, the process of producing copies is not as simple as it seems. To be able get the best results of prints, first you’ll need to know about some of the factors that affect print quality.

Digital imaging printing is a good choice when you want to print a photo quality images. How to know if your printer is good enough to print a photo quality images? Digital printers measure their performance in terms of the number of ink dots per inch they produce. It is generally considered that 300 dpi is required for photo quality prints. DPI is an abbreviation for Dots Per Inch, and it specifies the number of dots in a square inch that make up an image on a printed page. More dots in a square inch mean a smoother image, whereas an image with a low DPI, the dots may be visible to the naked eye. The recommended minimum DPI is 150, while 300 DPI will make an excellent quality print.

Digital imaging printing is satisfactory, but the printer alone is not enough, you must also put onto consider of what kind of paper you will be using. For photo quality images, it is best to use a name brand sheet of photo papers such as Kodak and Fuji.

A thermal printer is also a good choice. Thermal printers have a color ribbon of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black or the CMYK colors inside of them. With these 4 colors, any color can be printed. The printer reads the color scheme of your image and heat is applied to each color on the ribbon. The result is a near perfect reflection of your previewed photograph, which has been “pressed” onto the photo paper. Thermal prints do not smudge and last a great deal longer than ink-based photos.

Knowing how big a file that needs to be to make a print is also one of the biggest sources of confusion about printing concerns resolution. Size also matters here. The size of the image file determines the maximum size at which it can comfortably be printed before the image starts to break down or become “pixilated”. You can calculate the size of your image by taking the pixel dimensions and dividing it by the resolution of the printer. For instance calculation, if you have a 2,400 x 1,800 pixel image on a 300 dpi printer it is easily be printed to 8 x 6 inches. You can also print it in a larger size but you will lose quality.

Another problem is by matching the color on the screen with the print, the reason is that there’s a big difference between them if your printer is using the color scheme CMYK, while your monitor is formatted as RGB or the Red, Green and Blue color scheme. This can make a big difference in what you preview versus what you print. A tip of advise always perform a checking first, check if the calibration of the monitor is correct and it matches the printer before you print.

How to Print Colored Images

Have you ever wondered how your photographs, logos, graphs and other colored documents are being printed?

Color printers bring life to your dull images by giving them vivacious, bright and crisp colors that make us take a second look or perhaps hypnotize us by their awesome magnetism.

Printing colored images happens by dividing a page into a great number of tiny dots. The printer responds to the computer’s work by moving crossways and downwards to print each dot of color on the page. Sometimes, two or three colors are put on top of each other to create a new color. There are also times when it just has to leave a blank white spot.

Computer monitors display three base colors - red, green and blue (RGB), to create colors on screen. Adding these three colors will result to white. This is the reason why the process is called additive color.

Color printers, on the other hand, use four base colors – cyan, magenta, yellow and black (popularly known as CMYK). When two of the subtractive primaries (cyan, magenta and yellow) are mixed, they can create red, green and blue. When all are mixed, black is created. To provide a richer black, commercial printers use a separate black color.

In order to get the right color of the image, the printer has to generate tiny dots that blend with the target color. This is called dithering or half-toning. Smooth gradation is one signal of half-toning. To do this, colored dots are aligned in a grid called cells. After that, these cells are printed with the primary colors in different quantities to form other colors.

Aside from dithering or half-toning, another consideration is the color gamut. The latter refers to the range of colors that can be created through devices. The photographer’s color gamut is far different from that of the printer. Thus, in order to create a closer semblance, colors must be close enough to the original colors.

As regards to the two most popular color models (CMYK and RGB), both of them must be taken into consideration before printing. RGB gamut is different from CMYK gamut. Moreover, some colors belonging to one model to another may not display accurately. These colors are called out-of-gamut colors.

In printing the right colors, be sure to convert RGB to CMYK colors. That way you can have the exact counterpart.

How to print vibrant colour images

Many colour inkjet printers can print brilliant and vibrant colours. To get the most out of your printer colour-wise, you should calibrate it regularly or at least use your image editing or dektop publishing application's colour settings correctly in combination with a colour profile for every paper you'll use. This will ensure a photograph prints with the most vibrant colours without posterization.

The professional term for ensuring colour prints look their best, is colour management. Colour management involves different steps, but the most important one is to use a colour profile per paper you intend to use.

Most inkjet photo printers come with the ability to print your photographs using the printer's built-in settings. These settings are hard-coded in the printer's firmware, and they often produce very nice results if you don't mind getting results that are nice, but not the best your printer and paper is capable of.

In order to get the best performance out of a printer, you need to allow the image editing (or DTP) application to decide how the colours will look. Programs like Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, and their siblings like Photoshop Elements and iPhoto, all enable you to set up a colour management workflow.

Setting one up is usually a simple affair, but if you have doubts, there are a few simple guidelines that will put you in pole position. The first is to choose AdobeRGB as your working colour space. If you don't have AdobeRGB, then use another large enough colour space. sRGB and your monitor's colour space are too small. Setting the working colour space simply involves selecting the profile with the name "AdobeRGB (1998)".

Then carefully read your program's instructions on choosing the right colour profiles for prints. Usually, this will amount to setting up your printer dialogue so that the image is printed using a colour profile that matches your printer AND the paper you're using. And here is something that you can do to dramatically improve the output...

The manufacturer of your printer will have included a whole bunch of colour profiles, but the truth of the matter is that those generic profiles will again not deliver you the best results in terms of colour brilliance. To obtain the best, you will have to create a colour profile for each printer/paper combination you're going to use yourself. That's one of the reasons why professional photographers can print such vibrant photographs. They use a profile for every different paper they use with their printer.

Creating such profiles is a bit difficult, and very expensive because you'll need specialist equipment to do it. Fortunately, there are a number of service providers who will create profiles for your particular papers and printer. You will have to send them a test chart that you forst printed on the printer/paper combination you want to use, and they'll process your target and send you back a custom profile.
