Most large sites will want bank account information and/or a credit card number. And before they even let you conduct business you will have to wait for this information to be verified. The verification time can vary from a few days to a few weeks. If you need a big ticket item, like a car, really fast, these sites will be a pain to deal with. Additionally, large auction sites that sell high value items will take a percentage of your selling price as a fee, if you happen to be on the selling end of a transaction. For a car or house sale, this can really eat into your profits. If you are on the buying end of one of these expensive purchases, you may need to be a member for a certain number of days before you are allowed to make purchases or bids. This can be quite frustrating if you want something fast.

In addition to having to pay fees and registration costs at many large national Internet sites, you will also have to abide by the rules governing how you are allowed to contact sellers and buyers. Most sites will want you to only conduct communications through their platforms. You will have a difficult time getting phone numbers and personal e-mail addresses. Not being able to get in direct, immediate contact with a person, will really hamper a sale, especially when trying to buy a house or a car. Most of the time, there are many parties interested in a sale, and if the lines of communication are slow, buyers usually miss out on prime buying opportunities.

Small local sites are becoming increasingly popular because they have less stringent rules and they have cheaper transaction fees. Most small sites will allow you to trade phone numbers with other parties so you can enjoy immediate communication. Additionally, if you have some question about how to use the site properly, such as how to upload pictures, contact buyers or sellers, or simply navigate the site efficiently, you are much more likely to get a quick answer from the people who run the site than if you were dealing with a huge company. Some authorities will state that the reason for the Edsel’s failure was just poor market timing, not a poor product. Timing can be said to be most everything – vital for the success of failure of any product. In those days, before computerization allowed for rapid sharing an interchanges of design and the car design process – everything was done on paper. It took great amount of physical logistics and delays for the paperwork and blueprints to be sent and coordinated among the various players in the automobile design process. On top of that it seemed that “everyone “seemed to despise and those further down the line. The designers disliked their bosses and the engineers. The engineers hated the parts people etc etc etc. On top of that the name “Ford “was on the door signifying the ultimate authority in the car designs and marketing process. The Edsel project was initiated during a time of big cars – from G.M. the market leader , yet introduced many years later when the concept of a second car , a compact car, for the wife to drive the family and kids around was beginning to be established in the automobile marketplace

Other authorities will state that the reason for the poor market showing and demise of the Edsel was that it was just a poor product – poorly designed and poorly built. To further corroborate this viewpoint it is now known that the actual workers building the Edsels were none too happy building this model. The Edsel was not built on its dedicated Ford Division production line but rather the Edsel was built (or shared space) on Ford Mercury Division production line. These Mercury Division employees considered themselves as the luxury end of the Ford Car company entities and indeed saw themselves as a cut above the run of the mill Ford employee and workers.

They both resented the intrusion into their turf as they say it and as well felt that a Ford product was muscling into their terrain – that of more prestige vehicles. In the end the marketing and sales failures of the Ford Edsel can be said to be a combination of both factors.

Interestingly enough the unspoken order from the Ford family was that the new product – the “1958 Edsel” was to be named anything but Edsel. The late Edsel Ford was the founder Henry Ford’s only son and the grandfather of the then current patriarchs commanding and directing the Ford Empire. The senior Ford even stated that he did not want to see his late grandfather’s name spinning around on hubcaps. The design development process had worked with the “E” or “Experimental” Car. Since it was such a major and revolutionary product of Ford many assumed that the designation “E” car had of course stood for Edsel. How better to honor such a major figure in the Ford family and empire. Imagine if the name had not stuck. Would it of made a difference in the ultimate success or failure of the sales and marketing of this automobile product.

 

Times Have Changed: The Automobile, Social Values and Dating

Modern times create challenges we have never experienced in history. Social interactions, the way we date and find partners, have changed drastically after the proliferation of the automobile.

Have you ever looked closely at historic images of cities, say from the 1930's? The social atmosphere is very different. The fronts of buildings were positioned close to the sidewalk, families lived close to the center of town with a place to sit outside to greet the passersby, and the traffic was chiefly pedestrian. As a result, dating has drastically been affected by modern changes in the past 50 years.

The pedestrian and social enemy, the automobile: Since the invention of the automobile, designers and builders had to make space for parking. Well, this was a challenge at best as each automobile requires around one hundred square feet. A person requires approximately four square feet of space. Vehicular lanes had to be accommodated, restricting space for pedestrians, and adding vehicular and pedestrian conflict. Moreover, the vehicle is now regarded as the most important component of our transportation infrastructure with regard to safety and efficiency. What does this do to our social space? After the engineers design a street, and the builders accommodate the parking at the front of the buildings, the once social space turns into dead, vehicular only, depressing places. Imagine walking next to the parking lot of a shopping mall, next to a six lane arterial highway. Not much chance that you will find another pedestrian with which to rub shoulders. Conversely, a historic place such as Boston, is packed with life, and very little suburbs. In suburbia, the place to find your next date, the Circle K convenience store.

Prior to the proliferation of the automobile, people met on the streets. Pedestrians filled the streets with life that we can easily imagine, and is demonstrated in most historic cities around the world. In the historic town of Ybor City in Tampa, an old Cuban cigar manufacturing city, the workers had little houses called "casitas" which exhibited high ceilings, raised floor for air convection, and a quaint and approachable front porch. Every Saturday, the family would walk to the center of town to meet the neighbors, rub shoulders with others, and do the weekly shopping. Vehicles were not necessary, neither were large houses. The outside public spaces served as an extension of the interior space of their homes. This experience is still shared in many towns in Europe.

How are we easily able to meet new people during these modern times of suburbs, proliferation of the automobile, and a new understanding of an internal world. Computers and cell phones have been the crutch for the absence of social places. It would be nice to revive the values we once had, on the safe pedestrian filled streets and plazas.
