The kitchen TV

The acceptance of a television in the kitchen has gone a step further with dedicated television sets and specialist kitchen cabinetry.

The kitchen space has undergone a revolution. Gone are the days when the kitchen was a place for work and everyone was entertained separately in the living room. Now kitchens are open planned and guests are being entertained on barstools at breakfast bars and half tables. The preparation of the meal has now become the entertainment with guests being asked to help out with simple tasks while refreshments and nibbles are consumed. Gone too are the days of spending solitary confinement in the kitchen. Kitchens have now become more communal with all the electronic entertainment making its transition from the living areas of the home. One of the most important pieces of entertainment has been the television set or commonly known as the kitchen tv. The kitchen tv has now become more common place in the kitchen. Just think there is nothing worse than trying to cook a meal and missing out on the evening news or even worse, a cooking demonstration by Jamie. This is where a kitchen tv has found a place.

The kitchen tv has also evolved beyond a budget 14 inch box perched on top of the refrigerator with funny rabbit ears. With the cost of LCD and plasma tv’s coming down in price, the smaller ones are becoming highly favoured for use in the kitchen. The new technology screens are so flat that they can easily be mounted anywhere, where there is a vacant space. There are also water proof versions available. The kitchen tv can be mounted directly onto the wall in a fixed position or onto a hinged bracket that can be swivelled for optimum viewing. If available wall space is a problem, then there are kitchen tv models that can unfold from the ceiling and swivel.

Technology has also solved the overall size issue and extra stuff is packed into a small package. You can now get a kitchen tv that has a built in dvd player. Optional extras can be hard drive storage to USB connections for mp3 players or ipods. Because of the kitchen tv there is no longer a need for a hifi system. The sound quality on most kitchen tvs has enough volume and quality for even the discerning ear.

Safety is always an important consideration with all electrical equipment. To avoid electric shock be sure to mount a kitchen tv far enough away from any wet areas such as sink benches or dishwashers. The rule is that you should not be able to touch both wet area and kitchen tv at the same time. Even if the kitchen tv is not faulty it is possible to build up a reasonable static charge on the plastic surface, which will discharge thru you to any earthed objects such as a kitchen sink bench. Water proof models are a good choice if you are considering installing a kitchen tv close to a wet area.

A useful tip is to always use a remote control for your kitchen tv. Cover the remote control in plastic wrap or put it into a plastic bag. This will keep the remote control clean and protect it from water and oil spills. When installing your kitchen tv, remember to position it where you can see it clearly in the part of the kitchen that you work the most. This is because you can watch pre recorded or live kitchen tv shows of cooking demonstrations to help you along the way. You can follow the demonstration as you cook. Have fun in the kitchen.

An Alternative To A Kitchen TV

Why just have a standard television set in your kitchen when you can have a computer with all the features of a TV but so much more...

A LCD or plasma television in the kitchen is the ‘in thing’ nowadays. It is fast becoming common place to find a television set that has been permanently installed into the kitchen as a feature. The reason why is simple. They look great with their slim features and they can be mounted anywhere where there is a little space, whether it is on the wall, in a cabinet or on the ceiling. The tv in the kitchen is no longer located there for entertainment, but with a combined DVD player it is possible to run cooking demonstrations while the cook follows the instructions. Rewinding is optional. Why does it always look easier when someone else does it – go Jamie.

For all its worth, that’s about it with a kitchen tv. It plays whatever channels it can receive or what ever DVD you put into the player. But what if the kitchen tv was more than just that. What if the kitchen tv was more interactive. Wouldn’t it be a grate idea to install a LCD touch screen connected through a computer into your kitchen? I did and it works brilliantly.

My first attempt was about 10 years ago when the early LCD screens hit the general market. I installed one into a friend’s house who was remodelling their kitchen at the time and wanted to be able to access their email and check stuff on the internet. Touch screens were not readily available then, so we installed a standard LCD screen so that it was visible all the time and put the keyboard and mouse into a draw below. Because we had a good quality 5 metre monitor lead we were able to put the computer into an adjacent cupboard. We included a tv tuner module in the computer for local tv reception. The system worked very well and I also included MP3 player software which became a great source of continuous music.

Just recently we have replaced the old dated computer and monitor with newer equipment. The monitor is a new 19 inch LCD TFT touch screen and is connected to a new Pentium 4, dual processing computer. The monitor is the same type that they use for point of sales in retail stores. We still used the draw to put the keyboard and mouse into but we hardly use it and if we were installing this from scratch I would have done away with it. The great thing is that most of the programs we use are windows based and menu driven.

So what are the advantages of using a computer and touch screen monitor to a standard kitchen tv? Where do I begin?

It obviously has Internet access to the world wide web. Your emails or MSN alerts are received and displayed in real time while you are cooking. You can stream countless radio stations from anywhere in the world. The tv tuner can be connected to satellite and I understand that some ISP providers can stream cable tv via the internet. Endless amounts of music stored on the computer in MP3 format. It has all the functionality of a computer (because it is one) with all the MS Office programs accessible through the touch of the screen. The computer sound outputs connect to a high quality 5.1 sound surround system.

I had fun installing a computer as a tv in the kitchen. Its time to think differently and have a go yourself.

The Joy of Cooking – is way beyond Julia’s kitchen

For those of you who were born within a certain time frame, Julia Child’s PBS broadcasts and her subsequent cookbook, The Joy of Cooking, became the standard by which many explored and expanded their love of food.
