Murcia is located approximately forty-five miles south of Alicante in the Costa Blanca region of Spain. It is situated along the beautiful coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. If you plan to travel to this southern region, though, you should know that the city of Murcia does not have an airport. Though called the Murcia Airport, this airport is actually located in San Javier which is approximately seventeen miles south of the Murcia. The airport is both an air base and a civilian airport and is operated by the Spanish Airport Authority headquartered in Madrid. The airport has grown from a small airport to a larger airport offering flights from all over the world. With such growth, there are now more choices in flights and airlines as well as a variety of discount airlines offering lower priced tickets.

This airport has become much more popular as tourists visit the southern area of the Costa Blanca. This area is particularly popular with travelers from the United Kingdom. Fortunately, as the popularity of this airport increases, the airlines expand their choices offered giving travelers more flights, services and cheaper fares from which to choose. Currently, around 848,000 people fly into Murcia annually and it continues to increase. In addition to the discount airlines, some charter airlines also operate out of the airport as this is a popular location for charter groups to the Costa Blanca region.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will need to find transportation to reach your final destination whether in Murcia or a nearby city. You should plan ahead, as there is not bus or train connection at the airport. You can take a taxi or arrange for a car hire or airport transfer, both of which must be reserved in advance. An airport transfer is probably the easiest and most cost-effective transportation to and from the airport. It is a good option for those traveling in large groups since a taxi or car can fit only four individuals at one time and a limited amount of luggage. Transfers are available to the larger surrounding cities as well as train stations. Contact the company directly or a travel agent to make the appropriate reservations and ensure your transportation is available when your flight lands.

If you choose to use a car hire, you can arrange for these services at the airport. It is a good idea, though, to make the reservation before you leave home to ensure a car is available and get the best price. Four car hire companies operate out of the airport: Centuaro, Europa, Solmar and Eurocar. All four companies can be found in the main terminal building, but of course you can contact them ahead of time and make your reservation. If you intend to travel throughout the Costa Blanca area, a car hire company may be the better transportation to choose.

One thing Spain does better than many other countries, is offer magnificent buildings to see, and learn about. One such building is the Basilica de San Francisco El Grande, or church of San Francisco in Madrid. When it comes to the most important places to see in Madrid, this is right up there at the top of the list. To get an idea of how massive this building, the dome atop the church of San Francisco is larger than that on St. Paul's Cathedral. It is architecturally astounding. Inside the church are a number of sculptures and paintings that are a dream to view for art lovers.

Created with Neo-classical design, the church of San Francisco towers over a portion of old Madrid. The dome roof is a massive portion of the three-sectioned building. And while it looks large from the outside, you cannot really understand the magnitude of it until you view the 108 foot open ceiling from the inside. The interior is a vision, decorated with highly-detailed stained glass windows and frescoes. Considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in all of Europe, it is a sight that leaves many in awe.

When it comes to the history of the basilica, it was created under the reign of Carlos III in 1760. Even the grounds the church was built on had a religious history, having been a Franciscan convent in the past. It is believed the original convent was founded by St. Francis of Assisi himself in 1217. The entryway is a set of seven hand carved, fantastic walnut doors that take guests inside the chapels.

If you enter one of the three doors nearest the circular portion of the building, you may find the San Bernardino de Siena chapel. Look at the paintings on the wall here. One is a Goya painting of the saint, the other is a self-portrait from Goya.

While the church may not have been constructed until the middle of the 18th century, that does not mean everything inside is from the 18th century. On the contrary, many of the items in the church are much, much older. Even the choir stalls are from the 16th century, gothic pieces from Segovia.

In addition to the Goya paintings in the San Bernardino de Siena, there are other painted masterpieces by artists such as Maella, Cano, and Zurbarán, not to mention beautiful sculptures in marble by artists such as Benlliure and Bellver.

While it may seem like the church is more of an art sanctuary, with so many masterpieces inside, it is also a fully operational cathedral. While visitors are welcome, they will be accompanied by a guide and are asked to remain silent as a sign of respect as they pass through.

When you are planning your sightseeing tour schedule, the church of San Francisco is easy to get to. It is located in the Plaza de San Francisco el Grande, and can be accessed from the La Latina of Puerta del Toledo Metro stops.

Madrid, Spain has a long and complicated history. For centuries it ruled half the world as the center of the monarchy power, but it is now a one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. One central to the Spanish Inquisition, Madrid is now known for its vibrant nightclubs, incredible shopping and abundance of art.

A trip to Madrid rewards the traveler with first-rate soccer and bullfighting, and shopping third in Europe to only Paris and London. The traveler also experiences the best and most beautiful art museums, parks equal to those in Manhattan, New York. A trip to Madrid is surely not a quick pass through. Visitors should anticipate spending some time in the city.

Art lovers will surely want to visit the Prado, but the Museu Thyseen-Bornemisza is a recent addition that should definitely not be missed. It was founded by the family of wealthy industrialist Baron Thyssen and his wife, a former Miss Spain, housing over seven hundred of Europe’s beautiful treasures from the thirteen to the twentieth centuries. The Queen Sofia is home to an abundant amount of twentieth century art, enough to satisfy fans of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

However, there is more to Madrid than the art museums. You can take a walk in Madrid’s sunny climate and visit the beautiful Parque del Buene Retiro. Though this park is smaller than Manhattan’s Central Park and even smaller than London’s Hyde Park, it is no less beautiful with lakes, sculptures, lovely grounds and Crystal Place.

At nearby Plaza Mayor, travelers can enjoy a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants or cafes. Or, they can simply sit under the shade and “people-watch.” The Plaza Mayor square is nearly 100m on each side and is surrounded by buildings that have watched many things throughout the years, from beheadings to bullfighting.

Be sure to allow time for a visit to the Royal Palace, or Palacio Real. It was home to Spain’s monarchs and still contains the Royal Armory, throne room and Royal Pharmacy. Visitors can stand in some of the 2,800 rooms and imagine what it was like for the royal families and monarchs ruling half the world from that very room. It is not a difficult thing to imagine, though, when you are looking at displays of El Cid’s sword, porcelain vases and hundreds of jewels.

Of course, leave time to shop. Gran Via is Madrid’s most well known shopping area. You can find anything form the popular El Rastro flea market to department stores, such as the El Core Inglés. In addition to these, Madrid’s shopping offers much more, including Calle Montera, Calle Alcala, Calle Princesa and so many terrific stores and boutiques.

For anyone planning to visit Madrid, you will want to plan to spend some time in the beautiful city. There are many great packages available offering fabulous accommodations and great travel deals. Take a look and make your way to Madrid to experience its art, history, attractions and fabulous shopping!
