If you are looking to be soothed with serenity, spoilt with luxury and dazzled by striking scenery and wildlife, the Ol Pejeta conservancy is the place to invade. The Ol Pejeta is situated in Nanyuki, Laikipia District in Kenya nestled in the shadow of the majestic Mt Kenya. An easy three hour 250 kilometres ride form Nairobi the Kenyan capital will get you there. Accommodation in the Ol Pejeta is provided in the form of the Ol Pejeta house, the Buffalo house and if you fancy some outdoor camping, there is the sweet waters tented camp.

The Ol Pejeta has an intriguing history. Now owned by the Serena Group of Hotels, Ol Pejeta was previously owned by one Adnan Khashoggi. Khashoggi was an extravagant tycoon who its alleged influenced many geo-political events in the 1960`s including arms deals and was the uncle of the Dodi Al Fayed, princess Diana’s lover. It is rumoured he inspired the Novel The Pirate by Harrold Robbins.

The Ol Pejeta ranch is on the leeward side of Mt Kenya and is as a result warm during the day and quite chilly during the night. The Ol Pejeta Serena sweet waters tented camp is the surprise package of the Ol pejeta conservancy. It is situated next to the Ol Pejeta House and it lies right on the Equator. It is comprised of about 35 canvas tents on raised platforms snuggled by a remarkable waterhole cherished by warthogs and giraffes that come to quench their thirst. The tents don’t compromise on comfort but still retain the wilderness feel. After a ravishing meal from the five-star kitchen, the night game drive of the sweet waters is a MUST DO! Get nocturnal and make sure you use the blankets given to you once you start the game drive. It gets quite chilly at night….remember? The game drive is usually accompanied by a spotter. Its amazing how these spotters can identify an animal simply by the light reflected by assorted pairs of night eyes. I reckon it may be the colour/shape of the night eyes or the height from the ground. The animals that may be viewed include zebras, impala, hyena, antelopes, lions and other big five animals.

The Ol Pejeta house which was Khashoggi`s play ground is a three bed roomed house elegantly furnished and located on flourishing green gardens. There is the back yard veranda set on the back ground of undulating plains and the majestic Mt Kenya. If you ever wanted a beautiful setting for a wedding or a difficult lady to accept a marriage proposal the Ol Pejeta gardens will do the trick. The Ol Pejeta house boasts of massive 12’ by 12’ lavish beds complete with canopies where you can snore and roll away the African nights if you have no company. (Did I mention weddings?)

There are two stunning swimming pools where one may splash away during the day but not evenings when it’s chilly. Masseurs are available at ones request and camel rides are also offered during the day. At lunch time a mouth-watering buffet is served outdoors by the waterhole after which one may decide to raid the well stocked bar that is near the dining area. The sunsets at Ol Pejeta are scenic and the resident Naturalist then does a slide show on wildlife accompanied by some soothing acoustic music.

Another pleasant surprise at the Ol Pejeta is the Chimpanzee sanctuary. The chimps were all rescued from poachers and bush meat dealers. Donations are accepted towards this sanctuary and furthermore the chimps are also up for adoption to any wildlife lovers. El Morani the rhino is also present and can be visited. The Buffalo house is smaller than the Ol Pejeta house but still tastefully furnished. The Ol Pejeta guest compound has no electric fence and once in a while one may rub shoulders with a buffalo or other wild game.

If you fancy a holiday to revitalise yourself, an adventurous holiday or simply to relish some secret delights, Ol Pejeta is the place to be. Exclusive yet available and furthermore one can make a donation to the conservancy to banish all that responsible tourism guilt.

Portugal is located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the westernmost country of mainland Europe. It is roughly 350 miles long and 117 miles wide. It has a temperate year-round temperature that is influenced by the Gulf Stream. It’s Atlantic position provides a much cooler climate in the north with a good amount of rainfall in the winter.

Portugal offers many attractions such as sub-tropical volcanic islands, lush green meadows and not to mention 528 miles of beautiful beaches. Rich in tradition and history, it is one of the oldest nations in Europe.

Architecture is just one of the many intriguing features. Especially the Gothic style called Manueline which reflects the country’s prosperity during the Age of the Discoveries. Be sure not to miss the beautifully glazed tiles called azulejos which decorate most of the country’s buildings and monuments.

If golfing is a favorite, Portugal offers more than forty top-class courses including San Lorenzo which was officially recognized as one of Europe’s best championship courses. Surfing, water-skiing, swimming, horse-riding, and cycling are just some of the sporting activities one can enjoy while visiting.

Portuguese cuisine is very distinctive and offers many different specialties that have evolved from local ingredients and Portuguese traditions. Much of the cooking is spiced based thanks to the accomplishments of Vasco de Gama and other navigators of his time. He and his men circled the globe in search of pepper, cloves, curry, nutmeg, and cinnamon. All of which serve as the base of today’s Portuguese cooking.

Portugal’s rich cultural heritage extends to it’s capital city of Lisbon. This gorgeous city is widely popular for it’s restored palaces, stunning churches, and an immaculate hilltop castle. It’s most popular shopping area is the Baixa, which is made up of several small streets including the traffic-free Rua Augusta. A short walk from there brings you to Rua de Santa Catarina or downtown. Here you’ll find several quaint boutiques and stores. You’ll also find the illustrious Meridien Park Atlantic Hotel. Other accomidations range from fabulous five-star resorts to your most basic rooms. The towns of Cascais ans Estoril offer a more relaxed alternative as apposed to the hustle and bustle of city life. Apart from the hotels, it is also possible to stay in the more personal setting of a manor house. Here the guests are encouraged to eat and interact with the family.

Portugal is full of so much history and culture. It is a place that should be explored little by little so not to miss anything this wonderful country has to offer.

The White Villages Of Cadiz – An Archaeological Route

The Sierra de Cadiz, constituted by 19 townships, is a region full of natural, environmental, cultural, historical, and anthropological resources. The so-called White Villages offer us a wide range of unparalleled tourist possibilities. The colour of its rough geography, the whiteness and brightness of its streets, the greenness of its natural spaces, the location of its towns and the history transmitted through every spot and its most prized possession…its people!

The Sierra de Cadiz has been inhabited and visited from the most distant times and it has contemplated the passing of numerous peoples, cultures and different ways of living and thinking. From the Palaeolithic to the present day la sierra has welcomed amidst its striking geographic and environmental resources, all those who have chosen it as a home, dwelling, refuge or frontier. That’s why such a beautiful and spectacular landscape hides a treasure, the traces of our ancestors, our historical memory.

Remains of towns, settlements, cities, strongholds, villages, roads and paths exhibit nowadays a huge and rich cultural legacy represented in a substantial number of archaeological sites spread all around the regional geography. The archaeological route of the white villages is addressed to a public that is respectful to the patrimony and thirsty for knowledge and discoveries.

In the district of El Bosque, entrance to the Natural Park of Sierra de Grazalema, you can visit the Centre of Interpretation of the Archaeological Route of the White Villages. The Archaeological Route is divided in three sub-routes based on the three periods in which la Sierra enjoyed its most considerable historic prominence: The Prehistoric Period, the Roman-Iberian Period and the Medieval Period.

The Prehistoric Route is formed by the visits to the funeral assemblages dated between the fourth and the second Millennium B.C., between the end of the Neolithic and the beginnings of the Bronce Ages, such as the Alberite Dolmen in Villamarin, the El Charcon Dolmen in El Gastor, Tomillos Dolmens in Alcala del Valle and the Prehistoric Necropolis of Fuente de Ramos in Puerto Serrano.

In the Roman-Iberian route we can visit the city of Sierra de Aznar in Arcos de la Frontera with its striking “Castellum Aquae”, the Roman-Iberian cities of Ocuri in Ubrique, Carissa Aurelia in Espera and Saepo in the so-called Cerro de la Botinera in Algodonales.

The Medieval route includes many villages of the Frontier between Christians and Muslims, like the medieval village of Zahara de la Sierra, Olvera’s stronghold, the Great Wall of Torre-Alhaquime, the Barrio Nazari in Benaocaz and the paved roads on Villaluega del Rosario and Grazalema.
Apart from the archaeological resources the area also offers two extraordinary Natural Parks: Grazalema and Los Alcornocales.

The Sierra de Grazalema is located between the Andalusian provinces of Cadiz and Malaga and it houses an important relict wooded-patch of Spanish fir, a tree that has become a symbol of these mountains. The entire territory of the Sierra de Grazalema Nature Park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1977.

And Between the Sierra de Grazalema and Punta de Tarifa, stand a series of middle-sized mountains whose interior houses Natural Park Los Alcornocales, the 'kingdom of the cork oak' which is the most important formation on the Iberian Peninsula.
