Mexico is a country that has always occupied a special place among the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Its many treasures are of course known and loved by the countless thousands of people who have already experienced them, but Mexico has a way of enticing even those who have not had the opportunity to visit the country yet.

There are several places in Mexico that have contributed to the charm and allure of the country, among them: Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City. All of these have done their share in building the “Mexico mystique” and are definitely some of the more worthwhile places to visit in the country. There is however another area that somehow stands apart from all the rest and that is the area known as Baja California.

Baja California is a peninsula that juts out into the Pacific Ocean from the southern end of California. As you may well imagine given this location, Baja California is gifted with spectacular seascapes, making it an ideal destination for myriad different water based leisure activities. In fact, the area has attracted thousands of surfers and sailing enthusiasts over the years, in addition to the hordes of college students from the U.S. who have made Baja California their unofficial home away from home during spring break.

The water is by no means the only place to have fun in Baja California. In fact, with the sheer number of things to do and places to see, you may find yourself overwhelmed if you try to take them all in! The best thing to do is to plan your visit around one or two major activities–diving or whale watching for example–and plan for smaller, shorter deviations throughout your stay. Of course, if you are up to the challenge you may just decide to see as much of the area as you possibly can!

We’ve already mentioned the water and how much fun you can have in or around it: there’s scuba diving, fishing, wind surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, and even just lounging around in the sun and sand. There are other things to do in Baja California without even having to get wet however. For starters, there is cycling or even mountain biking. The highway that stretches from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas is a particularly popular route and attracts many cyclists every year.

If you are interested in traveling the less beaten path, there are numerous dirt road trails all over La Paz, Loreto, San Jose del Cabo and Todos Santos that will test the limits of both you and your bike! Of course if you want to get around at a slower pace, you can always go for a hike on the many trails in the San Pedro Martir National Park or in the Sierra Lagunas.

We’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of all the treasures that lie in wait for you in Baja California. Visiting this naturally rich and diverse spot will surely unearth a lot more for you to discover.

Rosarito - Baja California Mexico

For a number of years now, Rosarito has been a popular weekend destination for many Southern Californian tourists, most of them college students out to get a bit of a breather from their grueling classes. It’s easy to see why the area is such a popular tourist attraction given its endless stretches of beaches and excellent surfing spots, not to mention the vibrant nightlife and party scene, which is reputed to be one of the liveliest anywhere in the world.

What many people haven’t realized yet however is that Rosarito is also a great place for calmer and more relaxing pursuits. While its reputation as a party destination is certainly well deserved, Rosarito could very well be the perfect place to own a Holiday, Vacation & Tour home…or even plan your retirement.

One of the most surprising things about Rosarito is its location. It’s only 22 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border–which translates to about a 20-minute drive–but even this short distance is enough to transport you to a beach paradise where the weather is perfect all year ’round and breathtaking natural sights are an ever-present delight. The world famous warmth and hospitality of the local residents and the distinctively international flair of the area makes Rosarito stand head and shoulders above a host of similar tourist destinations.

One other factor that makes Rosarito such a pleasure is that virtually every spot on the beach is easily accessible from anywhere else. Walking is by far the most common way to get around and this will give you the opportunity for some truly memorable explorations.

While you’re exploring, you may want to take the time to indulge in another one of Rosarito’s most popular activities: shopping! There are several shops along the beach that offer everything from handcrafted leather goods to intricately designed silver jewelry. Whether you are intent on picking up a piece of local handicraft or simply looking around, a visit to these artisan shops will surely be a rewarding experience.

All that shopping is bound to work up your appetite and you will be glad to know that Rosarito has something that can help you out in that area as well. The area is home to an absolutely bewildering array of restaurants and food establishments, and whatever type of cuisine you are in the mood for, you will find it here. Of course traditional Mexican cuisine is well represented and as you can imagine, the quality is superb. If your tastes lie elsewhere however, there are also many American, French, Italian and Chinese restaurants to choose from. And you simply must try the world famous Puerto Nuevo lobster while you are in town.

With a full meal under your belt, you are probably thinking of ways to burn a few of those calories off, right? Again Rosarito delivers, with a host of activities that will have you back in shape for the beach in no time. Take your pick from several types of water sports, golf by the ocean, horse back riding, whale watching, ecological tours, spas and biking along the 3rd largest bike path in North America.

So whether you are looking for a quick weekend getaway for two or a place to retire, check out what Rosarito has to offer!

Consistently ranking as one of the top international destinations for U.S. travelers, Mexico has seen steady growth in airline and tourism options in recent years. American interest in Mexican resorts and spas has grown in tune with Mexico’s long-term tourism plan, a focus that contributes over $12 billion dollars annually to the nation’s economy. In fact, Mexico has become so popular with travelers that Cancun now ranks third behind London and Rome in international air bookings placed at a popular online travel site.

During the past six months, both major airlines and low-cost carriers in the United States and Canada have expanded service to several cities and resorts in Mexico by adding flights to existing routes and launching new services. As a result, Mexico’s 20 million annual visitors, over 80% of which come from the U.S. and Canada, can expect to see better rates and increased options for airfare and Holiday, Vacation & Tour packages.

At the forefront of this expansion into the Mexican air travel market is Frontier Airlines. With plans to launch round-trip service between Denver and Guadalajara in December, Frontier will now offer flights to eight of Mexico’s premier resort destinations. Having established a "secondary hub" in Cancún that services seven U.S. cities, Frontier has afforded American tourists increased access to the city’s unique resorts and spas. The carrier offers nonstop flights between Cancun and all seven of its U.S. cities.

In recent months, Atlanta-based Delta Airlines has begun offering new non-stop services to several Mexico resort destinations such as Acapulco, Merida, and Ixtapa from Atlanta; Mazatlan from Salt Lake City; and Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco from New York’s JFK.

Just this year as well, United Airlines has added services from Chicago to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, in addition to a popular route between Los Angeles and Cancun. In all, United now has 16 distinct routes to Mexico from the American mainland.

Even smaller carriers like Alaska Airlines have greatly expanded their offerings. Alaska’s flight capacity to Mexico has grown by 22% in recent months, with most flights originating in the Pacific Northwest and California and traveling to Cancun, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.

Many carriers have also introduced seasonal flight services for the winter months. American Airlines’ new weekly non-stop service from JFK to San Jose del Cabo in the Baja California region will be offered from Dec. 16 to April 9, 2007. For their part, Northwest Airlines will add several seasonal routes from Midwestern cities to Acapulco, Manzanillo and Ixtapa.

Much like their American counterparts, Mexican airlines are also making travel more accessible with expanded flight offerings. Aeromexico and Mexicana already operate daily routes between New York’s JFK and Mexico City, while Mexicana and its low-fare carrier, Click, will begin service from Baltimore to Mexico City and Miami to Cancun. Flights within Mexico have also increased, making it easier to visit multiple resorts in one family Holiday, Vacation & Tour.

Even Canadian airlines are getting in on the action. Air Canada has added 25 additional non-stop flights per week, bringing the carrier’s total to 61. Included in the new routes are services from Toronto to Cozumel and Ixtapa and Montreal to Mexico City. Sunwing Airlines has begun offering flights from Montreal and Ottawa to Acapulco and between Toronto and Cozumel.

Most importantly, this trend doesn’t show any signs of stopping as airlines, travel companies and the Mexican government continue to lure American and Canadian tourists. Currently, affordable flights and Holiday, Vacation & Tour packages aren’t difficult to find, a fact sure to further increase interest in Mexico as an international travel destination. Perhaps it can be said that there has never been a better time to plan that Cancun family Holiday, Vacation & Tour or romantic getaway to Puerto Vallarta.
