Africa is diverse continent with diverse cultural practices. African sexual mores cover both ends of the scale from repressed or conservative especially in North Africa which is predominately Muslim to a very liberal if that is the word to use in some areas especially south of the Sahara.

The downside to this sexual openness is that it has resulted in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS.

Despite this, female prostitution flourishes quite openly in streets and night clubs with most of these girls asking for as little as $20 for sex. Off course foreigners are often viewed as cash cow and therefore expected to pay a "special price" which could be anything between $50 - $100.

Male gigolos also ply their trade (mostly subtle) in beaches and beach resorts right across the continent.

If you are a woman and are traveling alone you may find your motives uncomfortably open to debate. In short, men will most likely consider you to be free and available and off course rich therefore a ticket to financial freedom. To ride the fairly constant attention you need to be confident with yourself and in your relations and dealings with others.
Should you come across overly persistent hasslers simply refuse to converse and you need not fear expressing your anger if it is how you feel. Asking other locals for help in ridding yourself of a leech also works.

A useful trick, that might help if you're not married and are traveling alone is to wear a modest "wedding ring" and you really don't need to go to the extreme of taking along a picture of a male friend with a husband-like message written on the back as proof.

Some female tourists to Africa arrive expecting sexual adventures that flirtatious pestering - irritating or amusing as it strikes you - is a fairly constant part of the scene, though machismo is rare. If you are a woman looking for a holiday affair, be aware that your lover more likely than not sells romance for a living.

You may be surprised to find out that male homosexuality is an accepted under-current in the Muslim areas of North Africa and along the coast of East Africa, although it's officially illegal and could theoretically get you time in the slammer.Attitudes elsewhere can be even more unenlightened, and many people don't even believe in the existence of homosexuality. The exception being South Africa, where same sex couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples under law. Obviously, if you're out in the sticks in South Africa you might encounter some less tolerant attitudes, but in places like cape Town you'll find a thriving gay nightlife. Elsewhere on the continent gay nightlife tends to be far more secretive and even seedy.

Finding cheap accommodation can also be a problem for two men wanting to share a room, as few guest house outside North Africa will allow this. For women sharing a room is fine and acceptable almost anywhere.

South Africa’s courses offer some of the world's best golfing and the climate is ideal for golf year-round. Many of the courses have featured on both the European PGA Tour, as well as the local Sunshine Tour. Compiling a list of the top ten courses will be contentious, but here goes.

Arabella Country Club
Host to the Nelson Mandela Invitational since 2003, and designed by Pete Matkovich, this Western Cape course was ranked among the top 100 best courses in the world, outside of the United States. Bordering a large natural lagoon, this demanding course stretches over rolling fairways, and has deceptive bunkers and tricky water traps.

Durban Country Club
The host of 16 South African Open Championships, this prestigious 18-hole, par 72 course has the honour of having three of its holes listed in the top 500 holes in world golf. The course undulates along the coastline, not far from the Indian Ocean, and wind variations will have a big effect on your game.

Fancourt Hotel Country Club
Located on the picturesque southern Cape, at the foot of the imposing Outeniqua Mountains, the four courses here have something to suit all types of golfer. Designed by Gary Player, the main courses have hosted major events, and Fancourt has one of the finest golf academies in the world, with state-of-the-art practice and teaching facilities.

Gary Player Country Club
Set in an extinct volcano in the Pilanesberg Mountains, this iconic par 72, 18-hole course hosts the annual The Million Dollar Golf Challenge tournament. One of South Africa’s longest and toughest courses, it includes two holes that rank in Golf Online’s list of the world’s 500 best holes. The course requires accurate approaches, due to the many bunkers and water hazards.

George Golf Club
Near Fancourt, in the southern Cape, this par 72, 18-hole picturesque course, lined with trees, features wide fairways and requires accuracy, especially on the long seventeenth, which is rated one of the 500 best holes in the world.

Glendower Golf Club
Founded in 1937, the 18-hole, par 72 course hosted the Transvaal Open in which champion Bobby Locke made his world-record score. Over the years, the course has been reshaped and rebuilt, and trees, water hazards, and bunkers are plentiful. The fairways feature numerous hazards and the greens are excellent.

Leopard Creek Country Club
Arguably South Africa’s best-known course, on the border of the world famous Kruger National Park, was designed by Gary Player. Wild animals such as lions, elephants and rhinoceroses are separated from players through innovative landscaping techniques, and over 200 bird species have been noted. The elegant clubhouse is sited on the bank of the Crocodile River.

Pecanwood Golf and Country Club Estate
This Jack Nicklaus-designed, flat course, bordering the Hartebeespoort Dam, and with the beautiful Magaliesberg Mountains in the distance, has well-placed bunkers and caters for golfers of all standards. Carefully positioned water features and strategically placed bunkers make the course a challenge.

River Club Golf Course
The exclusive River Club Golf Course in Johannesburg is for members and their guests only. The long course is kept in stunning condition, and has one of the toughest finishing stretches in South Africa.

Wild Coast Country Club
With the Indian Ocean as your backdrop on nearly every hole, this 18-hole, par 70 course near Port Edward has a testing layout, with wide fairways and huge greens, and is one of the most scenic in the country. When the wind is up, this course is tricky. Carts are compulsory.

I don’t know whether or not you have considered not only a Holiday, Vacation & Tour in South Africa, or even got as far as the planning stage. For most people a visit to South Africa tends to be in the middle of the European Winter, because of the attractions of blue sky and a much better temperature.

Naturally enough this is high season time in South Africa, and we should all know exactly what that means.
It of course means high prices, and crowds, two things that would put me right off.

Going to South Africa has to include at least a few days spent on Safari, so what does that mean in high season?
The first thing it means is a 40% hike in hotel room rates, and in the same vein, a substantial rise in air fares especially around the Christmas to New Year period.

In addition why don’t you consider the following thoughts:

If you want to fly from Europe to Cape Town, then fares drop sharply in mid August, and hotel rates stay low until September. It is true that the temperature in Cape Town over Christmas are around 25 degrees centigrade, and in August only 18 degrees. There is far more rain in August, but what are the advantages of a low season visit apart from the obvious financial one?

The first thing is, that you don’t hopefully go to South Africa to sit and vegetate on a beach, after all you can go to many other less interesting places and do that.

Tehre is more rain so in the Western Cape, The Namaqualand is in full bloom, just for a very short period of time.
It is a great time to go whale watching in Hermanus, and a wonderful time to visit Kruger Park, because this is when the animals congregate around water holes.

So in conclusion the best time to visit South Africa is not December/January, but August
